Cumberland High School offers students a five year sequential program in French and Spanish and a four year sequential program in Portuguese. Students who complete the language sequence that is offered develop survival skills in the target language and are well prepared for college coursework. Students who have satisfactorily completed seventh and eighth grade French or Spanish are assigned to French 2 or Spanish 2 as ninth graders. They may continue through their senior year for a total of 5 years of the language. Students that elect Portuguese begin their study in the ninth grade and may continue their study through their four years at Cumberland High School. Portuguese is a heritage language for may CHS students and the study of Portuguese language and culture is an important part of the CHS curriculum. Cumberland High School offers students studying foreign languages the opportunity to improve their listening and speaking proficiency through the use of the technology in the language laboratory that we hope to modernize with funding from the Phase 3 Bond. At present, the department also has 2 classrooms, equipped with 5 computers each, that teachers may use with their students to enhance learning. The Department of World Languages strives to provide meaningful cultural experiences for students studying foreign languages. Our travel programs have been very successful experiences for students who have visited France, Spain, and Portugal. Recently, English as a Second Language has become part of our department. We welcome this addition and hope to better accommodate the needs of this population.
